Two Bankruptcies, One Message: How FX and Commodities Are Reacting to Private Credit Risks

The recent bankruptcies of First Brands and Tricolor Auto Group have raised concerns about leverage risks in the U.S. private credit market, a sector now worth more than $3 trillion, according to The Guardian.

Although the bankruptcy filings were made back in September, the market reaction only became evident in mid-October, as investors started reassessing systemic risks.

Private Credit – The First ShakeUp

First Brands, a highly leveraged auto parts company, reportedly repledged its invoices multiple times to maintain cash flow before filing for bankruptcy.

Tricolor Auto Group, a subprime auto lender, was accused of doing something similar — raising doubts about transparency within private credit funds.

As Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan, once said: “If you see one cockroach, there are probably many more.”

That line perfectly captures the current sentiment, the market is beginning to question the hidden parts of the financial system.

Market Reaction – USD Slows, Gold Rises, Yields Fall

In early October, the USD showed little immediate reaction to these risks.

The DXY index moved within the 96–99 range, as long-term yields started to decline and safe-haven flows shifted into gold and U.S. Treasuries.

Gold (XAU/USD) climbed back to around $4,343, showing a clear rise in defensive sentiment.

The move was supported by the U.S. 10-year yield dropping from 4.15% to 3.98%, as markets began to expect that the Fed might turn more dovish to preserve financial stability.

Meanwhile, crude oil (USOIL) continued to weaken toward $56, approaching support near $54–$55, amid worries that tighter corporate credit could slow growth.

Risk-Off Sentiment Returns

The current reaction resembles the “mini credit stress” of March 2023, when Silicon Valley Bank collapsed. That event wasn’t large enough to cause a systemic shock but it was enough to trigger a defensive shift in sentiment:

  • Investors pulled money out of risky assets such as small-cap stocks and corporate bonds.
  • The USD retained its role as a liquidity haven in the early stages of credit stress.
  • Gold and government bonds benefited from safe-haven flows.

Insights for Traders

  • DXY: Likely to stay range-bound between 96–99. In the early phase of credit stress, money often flows into USD, which may push the index to test the 99 resistance. However, if expectations rise for the Fed to ease policy to protect the system, DXY could drop back toward 96.
  • Gold (XAU/USD): As long as it holds above $4,200, the next target is around $4,500. But given the strong prior rally, gold may need more time to consolidate within the $4,200–$4,300 range.
  • Oil (USOIL): If credit conditions keep tightening, downside pressure could test support near $54, and possibly break lower if financial stress spreads.

Overall, the bankruptcies of First Brands and Tricolor are not isolated accidents, they are warning signs of cracks forming within the hidden parts of the U.S. credit system. As credit risks rise, DXY, gold, and bond yields will remain key barometers reflecting global risk sentiment and safe-haven flows.

For traders, watch the flow of money because when flows shift, trends follow.
